Form 6251 Worksheet

Form 6251 worksheet is not reflecting the actual amounts as listed on the worksheet.

Line 2 of the worksheet says:  Enter the amount from Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR, Line 3a.

The program uses that number, Line 3a, but if other conditions exist, like K-1, Line 12, Code B, it adds these amounts to Line 2, but there are no details provided as to why that amount on Line 2 above does not agree with Line 3a on the 1040.  Refer to Form 6251 Instructions for Line 13 of the 6251.  There are conditions that adjust Line 13.

Therefore, the worksheet is missing details when the return has other conditions, like the K-1, Line 12 Code B, as mentioned above.

At the end of the day, I believe Lacerte is calculating the return correctly but is not providing a correct detailed worksheet.

You can refer to my case numbers: 15160997665 and 15161035741

We received an IRS CP11 letter recalculating the tax return using the Line 3a amount, therefore causing a tax due for the Taxpayer.  I believe, since the worksheet did not provide the details on how Line 13 was calculated, they use the nomenclatures on the worksheet and did not look further.  It is scary to think that the IRS does not have in its program this calculation.

If you have further questions, feel free to contact me.

I would appreciate a reply.

Which worksheet on the 6251? Do you mean the AMT Qualified Dividends and Capital Gain Tax Worksheet that flows to Line 13?

1) That's not an official IRS worksheet, as far as I can tell

2) It doesn't get transmitted with the e-filed return, so isn't being read / interpreted by anyone or anything at the IRS end. If it went with a paper-filed return, my money is on keypunch error / limitation in the processing of paper returns.

3) The IRS computer does not do a great job with AMT in general.

4) Heck, Lacerte does not do a great job with AMT in general. I don't disagree with you that figuring out where a specific number is coming from is difficult, particularly when you've got multiple passive K-1s.
