Filing Delays Due to Form 8960 and 1040-ES Instruction Status – Need Clarification

As of 2/22/2026, we are still receiving the following diagnostics:

  • Federal Form 8960 is final, but the instructions are still in draft.

  • Federal Form 1040-ES is final, but the instructions are still in draft.

  • Federal ES Worksheets are final, but the instructions are still in draft.

  • Federal Multi-State Summ. is included in draft from.

Each diagnostic warns that if we file the return, calculations could change and an amended return may be required once the instructions are finalized.

At this point in the filing season, these diagnostics are materially delaying the printing and e-filing of completed returns. We have clients waiting, and we have no clear indication from Lacerte as to when these items will be resolved or removed.

What is particularly confusing is that the IRS website already has published instructions available for these forms. If the forms themselves are final and the IRS has released the corresponding instructions publicly, why is Lacerte still flagging them as “draft”?

Practitioners need clarity on:

  1. What specifically is Lacerte waiting on?

  2. Is this an IRS schema issue, an internal programming issue, or a timing issue?

  3. When can we expect these diagnostics to be cleared so returns can be filed with confidence?

We rely on Lacerte for accurate and timely updates, especially during peak filing season. The current uncertainty forces us into an uncomfortable position with clients — either delay filing completed returns or proceed with the risk of amendments.

A clear status update and estimated resolution timeline would be greatly appreciated by the community.

Final instructions aren't going to change anything.  Look at the forms involved.  If the numbers flow properly, go ahead and file the return.

A Trending topic from Lacerte indicated that while the 1040-ES instructions are still in draft, the mailing address for estimated payments isn't the current addressed.  That was supposed to be resolved in an 2/17 release.  Has that finally been updated?

I verified the addresses today with the corrected addresses per the IRS website and they are correct for Hawaii filers at least.

I am checking the calculations and just finalizing returns if the calculation is correct. I have not found an issue with the calculations.  It does not prevent me from printing the returns nor does it invalidate the e-file on the preliminary check.  I cannot wait for Lacerte anymore.

Just did the Thurs update.

The 1040 correct addresses were released by the IRS yesterday (2/25).  So that should be out in the coming Tues update.  The worksheets were released 2 weeks ago, well Lacerte? (foot tapping).

The instructions for 8960 were released 3 friken weeks ago, what's going on with that?  We are holding up a small mountain of returns due to this one.

Agreed! This is totally ridiculous!

Just loaded today's update - still nothing on the 8960 and 1040ES.  This is beyond ridiculous.  Holding 30 returns and more get added every day.  What can possibly be the hold up on these?  Someone has to have an answer.
