I requested an automatic extension for my client on January 21st, 2025.  Included with the extension request form was a payment that was to be automatically withdrawn on extension approval.  The extension request was accepted by the IRS.  I printed out the approval letter by Lacerte reporting that the extension was approved.  I noticed, and this is my concern, the approval letter from Lacerte indicates that the extension payment will be withdrawn on April 15th, 2025.  I was concerned about this as in past extension requests the payment was withdrawn upon approval which was far in advance of April 15th.  I inquired to Lacerte if the withdrawal date shown on their extension approval letter was provided to Lacerte by the IRS.  The Lacerte agent made an extensive effort to arrive at an answer but was unsuccessful.  The agent suggested that I should call the IRS for the answer.  I explained that I would be most happy to that and that I will.  However, I must be made aware as to the date of withdrawal as shown on the approval letter.  I will need to know WHO PROVIDED THE DATE FOR THE PAYMENT WITHDRAWAL.  Again, I inquired to the agent but was sent various published details on tax payments; none of which was provided the answer.  My question goes out to the community if anyone else has encountered this situation.  My concern also is the tax payment was extremely large ($ 130,000) and there will be a two and one half-month charge for interest and also late payment of tax if the tax payment has to wait until April 15th to be withdrawn. Any responses will be greatly appreciated, jflangonejr@gmail.com.   Thank you, tax preparation community.

I wouldn't trust Intuit to get that done correctly and would have gone directly to the IRS website to make a payment that large.  But in the meantime, you really should remove your e-mail from your post since this place is open for the whole world to see.

Have yet to get back to Lacerte.  I was unable to find the answer on my own, nor was Lacerte able to provide me with the answer.  I will contact Lacerte this Monday and see if they can help.  To again ask the Intuit Accountants Community, my question is" on the extension letter approval provided me by Lacerte it shows the tax payment submitted with the extension request is to be automatically withdrawn from the taxpayers checking account on April 15th".  I am unable to find the answer to my question which is "who determined the date of withdrawal?  Was it the IRS or Lacerte?  If Lacerte, I ask what was the source that led them to that conclusion.  It seems odd that the payment is to be withdrawn on the due date for filing 2024 taxes.  But anyway, can I ask anyone in the community if they have had a similar experience. Thank you for any responses.

Screen 3 > Direct Deposti of Refund/.Electronic has a check box, which I think you checked, to start this situation. Right below that check box is Extension payment date [O]. It defaults to the due date of the tax return. If you did not check the box then YOU selected April 15

If the client wants a payment earlier then they should make an extra 1040ES for 2024 directly with IRS. https://www.irs.gov/payments

If they do not want the payment with the extension to go through, go to https://www.irs.gov/payments/pay-taxes-by-electronic-funds-withdrawal and look towards the bottom to find

    • Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.

The client can call that number to CANCEL the April 15 payment.
