Warning to preparers: excess mortgage interest & RE Taxes Posted 3/30/2026
Today I clicked the box (Screen 29 Box 56) to allocate Mtg Int and RE taxes when taking the Std Ded.
BUT
THEN
I found more deductions (in my case medical). This made Itemized Deductions > Standard Deduction.
AND
SO
taxes were not as low as possible (because excess amounts remained on F8829),
SO
THEN
I deselected that box
IN ORDER TO
Get mtg int and RE taxes flow to Schedule A
AND
I
ALMOST
LAUGHED
COKE
OUT
MY
NOSE
I got a better tax result!
SO
NOW
I
AM
alerting LC and suggesting an informational diagnostic.
