SMART Worksheet print controls needed by software users.
Dear Intuit ProSeries Basic software developers.
Since 2005 for twenty-one years I have successfully used your 50-client Basic 1040 and two states tax preparation software. It fits the needs of my Rhode Island & Massachusetts taxpayers. Yet I rate your high-quality product as a “9” but stop short of “10.” Why? The lack of printing control vexes me and perhaps your other CPA and tax preparer customers.
My tax clients mostly desire only the most relevant tax forms printed for their annual federal 1040 and state preparations. They do not appreciate getting most “Smart worksheets.”
Your Basic software would be improved if I could control which pages to print and which to omit. In particular your “Smart Worksheets,” always electronically available, are mostly unnecessary in paper form. Yet these worksheets are always printed resulting in wasted paper usage.
One egregious example is Schedule C the Profit or Loss from a Business. My clients usually only need the first three pages of Schedule C but your software prints 10-11 additional pages, related to Qualified Business Income Deduction Smart Worksheets. This becomes especially absurd for a negative-income Schedule C business with no QBI deduction which nevertheless gets the 10-page print-out! If I had control of what I printed, these unnecessary pages could be omitted and the paper saved from the shredder!
In future developments of your otherwise excellent ProSeries Basic software, please consider improving your product. Add “individual page print controls” so only preparer-determined relevant pages are printed for federal returns.
The same print controls on state returns such as Massachusetts and Rhode Island would likewise be greatly appreciated. The MA software is particularly flagrant for printing frequently unnecessary “Smart Worksheet” pages. Thank you for your time.
Cordially yours,
Edward L. B., Ph.D.
