How would Intuit know it's a correction and not a different taxpayer?

If you're truly just correcting a typo and get charged twice, you can contact them and they should give you credit.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

It's how Intuit controls billing.  As Susan says, how would they know you aren't using one FEIN for several clients?

Verify the number (run a batch tape to check your data entry) before submitting.

IF there's a mistake, you can go to 'myaccount' to request a refund, on-line.  You no longer have to call them.
