Pennsylvania state extension requires $1.00 to file when no tax is due and Pa doesn't require payment with an extension

Proseries is requiring, when filing an extension in PA, the payment of $1 despite the fact that no tax may be due and Pennsylvania does not require a payment to be paid with an extension. This is requiring us to file an inaccurate form and causes problems when the return is complete and the program thinks $1 has been paid when in fact no money has been sent into the state.

You are requiring us to create a fiction that could cause an inaccurate return to be filed.

Someone else posted about this.

I can't find it because the search function here sucks.

I'd just mail the -0- due PA extension.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

So, you suggest, that although we've paid for the Proseries software and paid for the ability to e-file in PA that we pay for postage to mail in hundreds of PA extensions?

This is a pretty lousy "solution" to a problem created by the Proseries program- why not FIX the issue instead of creating more work & cost (last I checked USPS wants postage to be paid for items that are mailed) for the  purchasers of the software?

I have no control over the programming. I'm just a tax professional volunteering my time here.

If a taxpayer has been approved an extension of time to file his/her federal income tax return and does not owe PA income tax with the state return, the Department will grant the same extension for filing the PA tax return. Such taxpayers do not have to submit PA Form REV-276 or federal Form 4868.

@BobKamman Thanks. That must be new this year.

Amazing what one can learn when they read the instructions, isn't it?

@sjrcpa From the Pennsylvania instructions for 2023 returns:

If you have an approved extension for filing your federal income tax return, and you do not owe PA income tax on your 2023 tax return, the department will grant you the same extension for filing your PA tax return. You do not have to submit a PA Form REV-276 or federal Form 4868 before the due date.

I didn't go back any farther than that.  California (which coincidentally has a governor from the same political party) has been doing the same thing for years:  If you don't owe money, and you have a federal extension, we don't want your paperwork.  I'm sure Elon Musk would approve.  But some old dogs may find it difficult to learn new tricks.

Obviously it has been a number of years since I read those PA instructions.

MD and VA are the same. No money due, don't file an extension.

NJ does the same-attach copy of the 4868 to the e-filing for NJ 1040.

This is like the YouTube video short that asks you to name the only country named after a woman.

Is someone going to name a state with this extension procedure, and a governor from the other political party?
