I live in an area where there is a higher than normal elderly population. Id love to see a button added or something as to how it can easily swap the taxpayer and spouse when one passes (even MFS when it occurs) to allow a more efficient tax return.

as of now, its a mess to do and haven't found an easy way.

In the year of death, it's still a joint return, and really doesn't make a difference.  You just have to point out the correct line to sign "as surviving spouse."  My experience is that in the following year, the program automatically picks up just the surviving spouse, even if she is the second listed on the previous joint return.

It makes a difference if you have an overpayment you want to apply.  The surviving spouse needs to be the Taxpayer.  I agree, it is a pain to switch.

No, that is not what happens.

Estimated Taxes for Decedents
  1. Deceased taxpayers are liable for ES payments due on installment due dates occurring prior to the date of death.

  2. When the primary taxpayer on a joint return is the decedent:

    1. The TC 150 posts with a Computer Condition Code (CCC) "F" and filing status 2.

    2. The secondary taxpayer account (if not currently on Master File) is established with a generated TC 000, blocking series 999.

    3. The TC 000 generated on the secondary taxpayer’s account is resequenced for one cycle.

    4. One cycle after the TC 150 posts on the primary decedent's account the computer automatically transfers credit-elect and/or payment(s).

I've got a better one..Why do we have to click on the "FIND CLIENT" button to bring up the cell to type in?  Why is that not already there?

Oh, never mind.  I just clicked this on and thought that Intuit had left the barn door open again and some wife swapping website had moved in. 😲

The biggest pain I run into with the software when a spouse dies is the confusion left with the software when you are dealing with 1099Rs.  The software gets a case of Alzheimer's not knowing who the 1099Rs belong to.

@IRonMaN "The software gets a case of Alzheimer's not knowing who the 1099Rs belong to."

That happens to me when I discover that when I first input the 1099-R a decade ago, I didn't check the box to indicate it belonged to the spouse.
