Taxpayer died 6/17/23 before filing his 2021 and 2022 1040s.  ProSeries 2021 does not let me enter his date of death, giving error message that date cannot be after 4/11/23.  There's no reason to set a limit on the date of death.  It is what it is.  This should not be an error.

Have you updated your 2021 program recently?

Thank you, Bob.  Tried that.  No updates available.  Error persists.

Have you tried running tools-repair updates from your windows start menu?

Thanks, IRonMaN.  No such animal in Windows 10 start menu.  And how would it affect ProSeries?

If you click on the start menu to get a list of programs installed on your computer and click on ProSeries 2021, you don't see that option?

Yes, this might be one of the dreaded Windows-Intuit conflicts.  Are you still an Intuit customer (for the 2022 program)? If not, maybe you're not entitled to 2021 updates anymore.

Are you paper filing?  I would guess by now the SSN has been locked and you can't efile anyway.  If PS won't let you print with the correct date of death, grab a pen.

Don't mean to be mean, but you should have finished the 2021 return before. I know you may have had a valid reason, but this is why I don't do old prior year returns. If they can't bring it in on time then they can get lost. It's challenging enough doing the current year returns let alone prior year returns that are past due.

I don't reject my clients just because they're filing late.

IRonMaN, you didn't make reference to ProSeries at first, and I thought you were talking about some Windows update thing.  This makes much more sense.  So I ran it, and it installed a bunch of changes, none of which fixed this problem.

That said, I thought my post was supposed to report the error to the IT team.  I do appreciate the community trying to help, but this is a program error.  Is there another way to report it?

Meanwhile, as long as I'm here, this raises the question:  how often should I be running explicit updates and "repairs"?  Does ProSeries have a setting that will take care of this in the background?
