Question

Will the Information Return System format the 1099s in the format required to use the IRIS system?

The IRS is fazing out the FIRE system after the 2025 filing season.  Will the Information Return System be able to format the vendor information in the correct format for the IRIS system by the 2026 tax filing season?

I don't know the answer to your question, but FIRE is supposed to still be available for 2025 returns (2026 filing season), so FIRE can still be used for the next year.

I can't imagine that Intuit or any other company won't have things updated to IRIS by the time FIRE is discontinued.

Hi @portercpas Thanks for stopping by the Community and posting your first question! Our development team is aware of the IRS’s plans to retire the FIRE system and transition to IRIS. The team is currently reviewing this.

@Kathi_at_Intuit  - Will the Information Return System program be able to transmit 2026 1099s to the IRS in the 2027 tax filing season?  I need to know if we need to start looking for an alternative program.

Hi @LeeB wanted to answer here in case someone finds this before the other post.  We'll be supporting the creation of a compatible transmission file to upload to the IRIS system.
